What Is Hospice?
Hospice is a program of services provided to a patient diagnosed with a terminal illness. Terminally ill patients are those whose life expectancy is relatively short and whose treatment has been shifted from curative to supportive or palliative care. Any individual who has been diagnosed with a terminal illness is eligible for hospice services regardless of age. Care is generally provided at the patient’s home, an assisted living facility, board and care, or skilled nursing facility, depending on what the patient and family prefer.
Who Pays for Hospice Services?
Hospice is covered by Medicare, Medicaid, HMO’s and most private insurance plans at no cost to the patient. If the patient does not have medical insurance and would like to receive hospice services, arrangements can be made for those who qualify.
The Admission Process
Once the patient decides to contact us, a nurse will be sent to the patient’s location for further explanation of benefits and to provide answers to any questions the patient may have. Our Medical Director along with the patient’s attending physician certifies the patient’s condition and expectancy of life. Upon admission, our attending physician in collaboration with the patient’s primary care physician and the interdisciplinary group will develop an individualized plan of care that fits the patient and their family’s expectation of hospice.
